Ronda Wild Crab Hunters

My hometown in Ronda has been a home of some small but invincible creatures. It has been a domicile of these two-inch tiny creatures, which possess fierce claws that can dig more than 20 meters of the earth's mantle. Admirably, they walk sideways with their mostly eight unequal legs but, hey, they can multiply in large numbers!

It has a been my great fascination how these wild crabs survived years in a marsh in Barangay Palanas, very close to my home. There have been several flash floods that could have washed them away and there are numerous locals, including me, who are making them a great exotic item in their plates. Despite all of these, their population remained astonishing.

Together with some neighbors, my team set foot in the partly dense Nipa palm (Nypa fruticans) farm in Palanas and took courage in holding these aggressive creatures. This was our Kuya Kuyaw Trip itinerary:

Group Assembly and Preparation

We were a group of seven 'young' men and we prepared the following:
  • 1 empty sack (make sure that it is new and strong enough to hold the captured crabs)
  • one flashlight for each group member but it would be great if you have some reserves
  • knife or bolo (in case of emergency)
  • boots for each member
